A splenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the spleen, which is located under the rib cage on the upper left side of the abdomen. This procedure may be necessary because of tumors, trauma, splenic torsions or blood disorders. The spleen has many important roles but dogs can live a normal life without a spleen.
